BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO SURFING IN ULUWATU

How to catch your first wave (and hopefully not spend the entire lesson falling off)

Uluwatu is one of Bali’s most famous surf destinations. Big waves, legendary breaks, beautiful cliffs… and surfers who somehow make standing on a moving wall of water look ridiculously easy.

But don’t worry โ€” you don’t need to be an experienced surfer to give it a try.

If you’re a complete beginner, you can absolutely learn to surf around Uluwatu. You just need the right beach, the right conditions, and ideally someone who knows the local waves and won’t simply point at the ocean and say, “Good luck!”

Here is our beginner-friendly guide to surfing in Uluwatu.

CAN BEGINNERS SURF IN ULUWATU?

Yes! Absolutely.

The Bukit Peninsula has a mix of surf breaks, from powerful reef waves that are definitely better admired from a safe distance to softer waves that can be suitable for beginners.

The famous Uluwatu breaks around Suluban are generally more suitable for experienced surfers, so your first surfing lesson is probably not the moment to choose a wave simply because you’ve seen it on Instagram.

For beginners, places such as Baby Padang (also known as Padang Padang right-side) and certain sections of Dreamland Beach can be more approachable when conditions are suitable.

The important thing to remember is that the ocean likes to change its mind. The best beginner beach today may not be the best one tomorrow, which is exactly why local advice can make a big difference.

BEGINNER-FRIENDLY SURF SPOTS AROUND ULUWATU

๐Ÿ„ BABY PADANG

Baby Padang is one of the most popular places around Uluwatu for beginner surf sessions.

Just don’t confuse it with Padang Padang Left โ€” the famous and much more powerful wave for experienced surfers. Same neighbourhood, very different personality.

When conditions are right, Baby Padang can offer a more manageable place to practise paddling, standing up, falling off, getting back on the board… and eventually standing up again.

For guests staying at Village Bali, Padang Padang is only a short drive away.

๐ŸŒŠ DREAMLAND BEACH

Dreamland can also work well for beginner surfers on smaller days.

Depending on the conditions, there can be different sections of the beach with different types of waves, making it a useful alternative when other nearby breaks are feeling a little too ambitious.

That said, always check the conditions before jumping in. The ocean does not care how confident you felt after watching three surfing videos on YouTube.

WHAT ABOUT IMPOSSIBLE BEACH?

Impossible Beach is one of the closest beaches to Village Bali and a fantastic place to experience Uluwatu’s surf culture.

For complete beginners, however, it is usually best enjoyed from the beach โ€” preferably with a coconut in hand.

The waves can be fast, long and technical and are generally better suited to surfers with experience in reef conditions.

But as a place to watch talented surfers and enjoy the atmosphere? Absolutely worth it.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR FIRST SURF LESSON?

Your first surf lesson usually starts on the beach.

Before you heroically charge into the ocean, your instructor will normally show you the basics:

  • How to position yourself on the board
  • How to paddle
  • How to stand up
  • How to fall safely
  • How not to accidentally surf directly into someone else
  • A little bit of basic surf etiquette

Then comes the fun part.

Once you’re in the water, the goal isn’t to look like a professional surfer. In fact, you probably won’t.

And that’s perfectly fine.

Your first mission is simple:

Catch a wave. Try to stand up. Stay up for as long as possible. Celebrate anything longer than three seconds.

For many beginners, standing up for the first time feels like winning an Olympic medal.

DO YOU NEED A SURF INSTRUCTOR?

For your first time surfing in Uluwatu?

We would definitely recommend one.

The Bukit Peninsula has reefs, tides, currents and changing swell conditions. A local instructor can help choose the right surf spot for the day rather than simply taking you to the closest beach and hoping for the best.

A good instructor can also help you:

  • Choose the right conditions
  • Learn the basics safely
  • Understand where to paddle
  • Catch more waves
  • Avoid spending half the session wondering what everyone else seems to know

Guests staying at Village Bali can also arrange private surf lessons through the hotel.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SURF?

Unfortunately, there isn’t one magical answer like:

“Every day at 8:17 AM.”

The best time depends on the beach, tide, swell and wind.

One beach might be perfect in the morning and terrible in the afternoon, while another nearby spot could be the opposite.

That’s why local advice is often more useful than simply deciding that you are now a “morning surfer” after one successful lesson.

The best plan?

Ask someone who has actually checked the ocean.

IS ULUWATU A GOOD PLACE TO LEARN SURFING?

Yes! Especially if surfing is only one part of your Bali holiday.

The beauty of staying around Uluwatu is that several beaches and surf spots are within a relatively small area.

You can:

๐Ÿ„ Catch a few waves in the morning
๐Ÿณ Stop for lunch around Padang Padang
๐ŸŠ Spend the afternoon by the pool
๐ŸŒ… Head back to the coast for sunset

…all without making surfing your full-time job.

For travellers staying at Village Bali, Impossible Beach is within walking distance, while Padang Padang and several other Uluwatu surf areas are only a short drive away.

You can experience Bali’s famous surf culture without needing to structure your entire holiday around checking the swell forecast every 15 minutes.

START WITH THE RIGHT WAVE

You don’t need to arrive in Uluwatu already knowing how to surf.

Start with the right beach, choose suitable conditions, take your time and don’t worry about looking graceful.

Everyone falls off.

Even very good surfers.

(They just tend to make it look much more intentional.)

The goal of your first session is simple:

Enjoy the ocean, have fun and hopefully catch one wave you’ll remember.

And if you spend most of the lesson falling off the board?

Congratulations.

You’re officially learning to surf.
